...remember the pictures but forget what the story was about? Interested to know more? Here's a quick introduction from Sid: In our sensational world, our senses are constantly bombarded with information within or outside our bodies. Every move we make, every object we touch, everything we see and every sound we hear produces sensations that are registered in the brain so that we can make sense of the world around us. When all our senses are working efficiently, providing consistant and reliable feedback into the brain and effectively interpreted, we will be able to have a clearer understanding of ourselves and the world around us. This enables us to interact with our immediate environment.Children, in particular, thrive and learn about their bodies through their senses constantly as part of the development of body and mind. This daily “sensory diet” thus plays a vital role in learning. Sensory activities for young children in the classroom will increase learning while kids are having fun. A three-year-old's brain is twice as active as an adult's; therefore, this age is an important time in brain development. Stimulation is vital in the early years and sensory activities are an important part of their lives so that children can perform optimally i.e. to be more alert, adaptable and skillful. Even as adults we need this sensory diet too to keep ourselves going and alert! However, we generally require or crave less intense input but we constantly satisfy our sensory needs which vary in different situations. For example, take a look at the checklist below and see which activities YOU use to increase or decrease your alertness! Think of any other examples if you can
