Exam Week – Parents’ Survival Guide
studyinglate
With the end-year exams at our doorstep, now is the time to arm yourselves with goodness and care! These tips below will help your children and YOU survive the exam week. Take care and all the best from the EduCommunity Team Smile

1) Reinforce your confidence in them
Tell your child each and every day that no matter what, you are absolutely proud of him or her for going through such a challenging year and for trying his or her best. Leave little “secret notes” such as post-stick pads with words of encouragement on their room doors or on their computer screen – just to tell them how you you feel.

2) Get the nourishment they need
It is absolutely important to ensure that your child consumes balanced meals every day, supplement these with vitamins ( vitamin C and multi-vitamins for kids) and they must be given “loads” of water – all of which will definitely go a long way to making your child feel revitalised and not “drained” or sluggish just before the exams. If it is at all possible, there is nothing like good home-cooked meals for your child - this will help you to make sure that your child does not end-up eating unhealthily or even fall ill just before the exams. These recipes may help: healthy fish cakes and power snack mix

3)Keep stress at bay - relax child's nerves
Try playing soothing music ( anything that wo

uld reflect the sounds of nature or even the “music” of the ocean and splashing waves) just before they go to bed and throughout the night when they are asleep. Calming music (no “rock or heavy metal” sounds) never fails to help your child relax and go into a deep slumber! Alternatively ( or even along with music), a head, shoulder and feet massage will help your child get rid of all tension and feel reinvigorated – charged-up to face the exams with confidence.

4) Keep those happy thoughts flowing!
Allow your child to read a chapter or two or go online during revision sessions. Let them ”ravage” their Archie comics and give their PSP or computer game a go - this helps to break the monotony of revision and unwind a tense mind! Nourishing the “soul” through reading can only go a long way to making your child an effective and productive examinee. Alternatively, if your child is not much of a reader, then allow him or her to sing, play the musical instrument, to read a poem or two aloud or even draw – to dwell on his or her favourite pastime in-between the much needed breaks.

5) Give out positive vibes
It is absolutely critical that you as the parent keep maintaining a calm composure and never express your worries and concerns about your child’s ability to perform during the exams. You must continue to exude positive vibes, carry a broad and warm smile all the time and assure your child constantly that you have faith in him or her.

6) Note to Parents - Get OUT!
- Finally, all you caring parents out there, find time to relax too .Get out of the house every once in a while, for a walk, bite into that slice of your favourite cake, get your facials and shopping done, grab that first opportunity of getting a head massage or book that appointment with your reflexologist.  A happy parent will bring up a happy and successful child!

Do you have other exam week tips to share? We would love to hear from you.

My son is having his first exam in primary school. My husband and I are so stressed out that sometimes we get panic attacks. Suddenly I realized to take the exam like his just having a test.... this will allow us to relax our mood and our child will feel relaxed too.

Hi Karen... fully agree with you! It is easy to get carried away by the general mood of worry and panic that tends to surround the exam period. Taking tests and exams is part and parcel of our childrens' long education journey. Some kids may excel earlier while others are late bloomers and only find their 'footing' when they are much older.. regardless of which category they fall into, my hope is always that our children will always be positive about learning and discovering new things as they grow up before our eyes.

For me.. I was stressed and feel horrible sometimes, but now ... I make it win win solutions for both of us. She loves swimming, so... after study, I take her for swimming which will help her fall asleep and improve the quality of her sleep,. That's fair enough... we love doing that...
